Service charge disputes

A service charge is a payment made by a tenant to their landlord towards the costs incurred by the landlord in providing services to the property. This is payable in addition to the usual rent. A tenancy agreement or lease will usually set out what the service charge is there to take care of.

Disputes regularly arise between landlords (or management companies) and tenants as to whether service charges are payable and, if they are, how much is owed.

In some circumstances service charges can be challenged and landlords must adhere to the correct procedures in order to be able to demand payment.

Our property disputes team can advise you about a demand you would like to make (or have already made) as a landlord, or in respect of a demand you have received (as a tenant).
