Breakfast in the bar?

by | Aug 3, 2015 | Blog Posts

In an ever competitive marketplace I am seeing more frequently that operators of pubs, bars and other licensed premises are seeking to maximise their businesses profitability by increasing the offer of their business beyond the typical vertical drinking market. The addition of morning (typically, but not exclusively,  non-alcohol trade) has been very effectively utilised by various independent and national operators, with premises opening at 7, 8 or 9am, 5, 6 or 7 days a week to serve high-margin products such as breakfast, teas and coffees to customers.

Before opting to do so, it is crucial that you check the provisions of your Premises Licence to ensure that it contains nothing which will restrict you from provision of morning trade. Beyond the hours for which alcohol sales are authorised, check the opening hours of your premises (again, on the Premises Licence) and the conditions which are attached to the premises licence itself.

Where your opening hours are not sufficient (many pub and bar opening hours begin at 11:00am or noon) typically a minor variation of the premises licence will be appropriate. This will involve an application to the Licensing Authority. If there are no objections, either from the responsible authorities or the individuals making a passing comment following site of the site notice, the application will usually be granted.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of adding the ability to serve breakfast, teas and coffees at your premises outside your current hours of operation please do not hesitate to contact our Licensing Department on 0113 2971875.
